Wrist injuries are very common issue as we use our hands almost all the time. However, some of them might be a sign of another bigger problem.
Wrist injuries can occur as a result of a broken bone, inflammation, infections, abnormal growths and cysts as well as tumors.
Not every injuries is that severe, however you still need to pay attention to the signs and know when to visit a doctor.
An inflamed wrist may be cause by bursitis, arthritis, tendinitis as well as sprains, strains and bone fractures. The reason can be also benign or malignant growth, which is why we suggest visiting a doctor immediately if the injury doesn’t recover.
Here are the main causes of wrist injuries:
Tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sheath (synovium) that surrounds a tendon. This occurs when we experience trauma or over stress, and particularly affects people with physical jobs. The abductor muscle and the short extensor in the thumb are usually affected by the inflammation, which can thicken the ligament and harm the sheath (synovium).
De Quervain Syndrome
When the extensor ligament of the thumb get affected, we get soreness and swelling as well as cysts and nodules. This causes the ligament to thicken and causes severe pain.
This problem is caused by tumors in the hand. They usually occur in the thumb, index, and medium finger, but can also be found in the hip, wrist, ankles, knees, spine and shoulders. Fortunately, these tumors are usually painless.
It is a lump in the synovial cyst or some other connective tissue or fibrous structure next to the joints, mostly ligament or tendon. This may be related to a past trauma, with 50-70% of the lumps on the wrist being gangliomas. They usually grow up to 2.5 cm in size.
Tumors in the wrist and in the palm which are extremely painful and makes your hand sensitive are called lipomas. The treatment for wrist injuries depends on the severity and the cause of the problem. If the injury is disturbing and painful, it can be treated with painkillers. Nevertheless, if it causes more serious problems, it may require a surgery.
This is why it’s essential to identify the problem on time and consult a doctor for the appropriate therapy.
