Unfortunately, the modern times we’re living in have made us consume more and more processed foods, instant meals, and junk food. However, these foods are everything but healthy. In fact, they can be detrimental.
Dr. B. Kuo from the Massachusetts General Hospital conducted an experiment with a pill-sized camera. Namely, he used it to discover the effects of instant noodles inside the stomach and digestive tract. Believe it or not, after a couple of hours, the noodles were still intact. He added that these noodles have no nutrients, but on the contrary, they’re filled with additives like TBHQ.
Since they remain in the digestive tract and don’t get decomposed further, they can cause a lot of negative effects. This additive is a byproduct of the petroleum industry and it’s a synthetic chemical with antioxidant properties, but it’s not a natural one. Namely, it encourages the oxidation of fats and oils and prolongs the shell life of processed foods.
It’s frequently used in products like Taco Bell beans, Teddy Grahams, Red Baron frozen pizza, Wheat Thins crackers, McDonald’s chicken nuggets, Reese’s peanut butter cups, etc. Believe it or not, it’s also regularly added to cosmetics, perfumes, pesticides, and lacquers. According to the WHO and FAO, this product is safe for consumption at levels of 0 to 0.5 mg/kg of the body weight.
The FDA explained that this additive mustn’t exceed 0.02% of fat and oil presence. The Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives emphasized that TBHQ is known to cause delirium, nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, and a feeling of suffocation. The EWG reported that long-term exposure to this compound caused liver problems, biochemical changes, and reproductive issues. To make matters worse, a study conducted by the Journal of Nutrition, women who ate these noodles had an increased chance of metabolic syndrome.
Unfortunately, the people who consumed them twice per week had a 68% increased risk of the abovementioned syndrome, manifested by high blood pressure, low levels of good cholesterol, obesity, and high level of triglycerides. This condition increases the risk of cardiovascular illnesses and diabetes.
Furthermore, those who ate these noodles on a regular basis showed a decreased intake of nutrients like iron, potassium, vitamin A and C, niacin, phosphorus, calcium, and protein, unlike those who ate regular noodles. These noodles are filled with palm oil, wheat flour, salt, seasoning, sugar, and monosodium glutamate.
In 2012, the KFDA found a cancer-causing substance, Benzopyrene 6 in noodle brands from Nong Shim Company Ltd, because of the presence of monosodium glutamate-an excitoxin that overwhelms the nerve cells and causes brain damage or dysfunction, as well as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Regular consumption of instant noodles can cause a long list of health issues like chronic diseases, weight gain, chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and much more. Instant noodles contain a lot of artificial ingredients, refined carbs, fructose, and sugar, whereas they have little or no presence of fiber and nutrients.
All in all, excluding all kinds of processed foods from your diet is one of the smartest moves you can make. Take care of your health, but the health of your loved ones as well.
