A lot of people, usually adults who are trying to lose weight, tend to skip breakfast. However, what they don’t know is that this habit could lead to failure, later on in the weight loss process, as these people overeat during lunch or during snacks.
When a person skips breakfast, the brain is tricked into thinking that you want calorie meal- foods which increase the risk for weight gain. Nonetheless, you won’t desire a larger meal or snacks if you consume oatmeal in the morning.
A study included 36 women and men separated in 3 groups. 18 of the participants were with normal weight and the other half were overweight. Each group ate 3 different foods for breakfast. One group consumed 350 calories of cooked oatmeal, the other one consumed 350 calories of corn flakes, and the last one drank only 1, 5 cups of water.
During the study, the researchers analyzed the fullness at intervals before and after breakfast, as well as the rating of appetite and hunger. They were also checking the hormone levels, acetaminophen, insulin, and glucose through blood samples of the participants.
After oatmeal consumption, the satiety levels were greater than the satiety levels in the group which consumed corn flakes, despite the same number of calories. Hence, in the water drinking group, the participants experienced the same level of hunger for breakfast as they did when they ate corn flakes, after a 3-hour period.
The overweight group had more pronounced results, showing that these individuals are more responsive to effects of satiety of the dietary fiber present in oatmeal.
All in all, the study shows that people who want to lose weight can freely consume oatmeal for breakfast.
